The Bill Dickey Scholarship Association (BDSA) would like to share highlights of the Inaugural John Shippen National Invitational, held at the Detroit Golf Club, June 27-28, 2021. We pay homage to the late John Shippen, and his team for their vision and ingenuity to propel African American amateur and pro golfers’ careers. The invitational provided a unique platform and opportunity for these golfers.

The BDSA is especially proud of the alumni and scholars who were selected to compete in the tournament. It is simply amazing that a minimum of 14 players who competed in the tournament have been supported by the BDSA over the years, through scholarship opportunities, competitive tournaments lead by the BDSA and the Bill Dickey Invitational Junior Golf Championship (BDI).

On behalf of the Bill Dickey Scholarship Association Board of Directors, congratulations to the winners and all participants!

Winners

Veteran player, Tim O’Neal is the first John Shippen National Invitational winner. His outstanding victory resulted in securing an exemption into the Rocket Mortgage Classic. We are very proud of Tim’s win and look forward to other future BDSA alum and scholars succeeding in this tournament.

In continuing the excitement of sharing victorious wins, Shasta Averyhardt, a native of Flint Michigan and Anita Uwadia, a South Carolina took home the victory in the women’s team division. Shasta is also a BDSA alum. We are thrilled that she has earned the exemption into an LPGA Tour event next month where she will once again compete for the first time in eight years.
