Project Description

Get to Know the BDSA and BDI Scholars

GET INVOLVED

A Thank You from Lauren Blumears, New Mexico State, Las Cruces, NM

I have been a recipient of the Bill Dickey Scholarship for the past three years. I am now in my final semester of college. I am so thankful to have been part of such and incredible organization through High School, and to have been a proud recipient of this amazing scholarship. My goals for college would have been unobtainable without the help of the BDSA. Last year was my first year not playing golf, I had the rug pulled from under me and lost a majority of my funding for my education through my athletic scholarship. Thankfully this organization was there to lift me up. I took summer school classes this semester in order to graduate early and again, the BDSA stepped in to help me achieve this goal. I would like to personally thank, Ms. Andrea Bourdeaux, for being such a reliable point of contact for myself throughout the scholarship process.

I will be graduating this fall 2018 with a Bachelor of Arts & Science in Government and a BAS in Psychology. These two degrees will be supplemented with University Honors through the current thesis I am working on, as well as cumulative 3.95 GPA. My success in my undergraduate years is due, in large part, to the monetary support I received from this institution. Once I have graduated I plan to work, travel, and gain some real-life experiences. After this gap year I will be attending law school in fall of 2020.

I am excited for the future I have envisioned for myself. A future in which I will able to give back to this great organization as it has given to me.

Best regards,

Lauren Blumears

About Lauren

Lauren Blumears of Phoenix, Arizona, is graduating with honors this fall as a double major in Government and Psychology from the College of Arts and Sciences. After completing her Honors thesis this fall, Lauren has earned a 3.95 GPA and maintained regular status on the Dean’s List and in the top 15% of her class as a Crimson Scholar. Her academic success made her the recipient of numerous scholarships along the way at NMSU.

On top of her scholarly achievements, Lauren played on the Aggie Women’s Golf team for two years. In high school, she reigned as the first woman captain of her golf team – a leadership trait she brought as an NMSU student-athlete. She volunteered her time with junior golf associations and
coached children’s golf programs, specifically those that help young minorities compete.

During her final two years at NMSU, Lauren spent her time leading numerous tutoring sessions to coach dozens of her peers. She also committed herself to three major research projects at NMSU, guiding research, compiling data and completing literary reviews as a research assistant.

After graduation, Lauren plans on attending Law school in the Fall of 2020. She hopes her law degree will help her in her commitment to uplift those with marginalized voices.
